Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about your claim recovery.

What is an Asset ID and where do I find it?

An Asset ID is the reference number we use to identify a specific unclaimed property record held by the state. It is printed on the GovRecover.org notice we mailed or emailed to you.

What does each status on the tracker mean?

Once your signed claim documents are received, your packet is finalized and sent to the state's Unclaimed Property Program. The status moves to 'Sent to state' once we have submitted the packet, and to 'Waiting for the government' while the state is reviewing ownership and supporting documentation. Once approved, the state releases the funds and we mark the claim as 'Check mailed'.

How long does the claim process take?

Processing times vary by agency workload and the complexity of your claim. Many claims are resolved within 6 to 12 months after a complete packet is submitted. Claims that require additional ownership documentation, prior addresses, name changes, or court records may take longer. We will reach out using the contact method you provided if the state requests additional items.

How will I be notified of my claim status?

We send updates by phone, email, and text using the contact method you supplied at intake. You can also check this tracker any time using your Asset ID. Claims are reviewed in the order received, and we ask that you allow a minimum of 90 days before requesting a status update directly. Approved payments are issued by the state directly to the verified claimant.

What if the state requests more information?

If the state needs additional documents, your GovRecover specialist will contact you with the specific items required. Providing requested items promptly helps prevent further delays.

Is there a deadline to file a claim?

The state generally holds unclaimed property indefinitely until claimed by the verified owner or authorized party, so there is typically no hard deadline. We recommend starting the claim process as soon as possible because claims are reviewed in the order they are received.
